Formerly, "Just Thinking", this blog presents the thoughts and experiences of a family historian trying to demystify the past and uncover the stories of an elusive ancestry. Surnames in Franklin County, NC are YARBOROUGH, GREEN, HAWKINS, and DUNSTAN. In Halifax and Warren Counties, surnames are DAVIS, BROWN, and ROSS. With so much of my family's history shrouded in darkness, is my personal mission to uncover the hidden details of my ancestry and bring them INTO THE LIGHT.

How fabulous is that. I would love to find a tombstones of more of my ancestors. Is that in NC?
Hey Mavis,
This ancestor was a member of the slave-owning part of my ancestry, which I've discovered as a result of my research, and have confirmed via DNA testing. The majority of my ancestors lie in unmarked graves in "Colored" Cemeteries, or in locations that will not likely ever be identified.
Oh, and yes, this tombstone is a Raleigh Cemetery. Thanks for reminding me that I needed to add the location, as well as the source information!

I love the name Jacobina. The only other place I've seen it was on my husband's lineage, one of his ancestors in Spain! It was not a common name there, either, since it is not a Saint Name (catholic) we suspect she was from a converso (Jewish) family. Old testament names were common in New England, but I had never seen it here until your photo from North Carolina.
